Inexplicable Installation Errors

I am attempting to install Idea 9.0.3 into a Win 7 VM. When I try to run it, it dies complaining about :

Fatal error initializing class com.intellij.openapi.fileTypes.FileTypeManager: java.lang.NullPointerException
Complete error stacktrace was written to idea.log

I've manually uninstalled it and reinstalled it to no avail.

I tried downloading the Community Edition and it dies complaining about cyclic dependencies.

Is there some clean uninstall process available? Am I missing a directory to clean up? Is there anything about a Win 7 VM running under VMWare that would cause problems?

Hello Brian,

Could you please attach %USERHOME%\.IntelliJIdea90\system\logs\idea.log?

I've had the same problem, with 90, 90beta, 903 and 904.

It's hard to attach an idea.log file for it, because %HOMEPATH%\.IntelliJIdea90 is actually a directory that I don't have access to.

Now that may sound strange, but the problem is described in the microsoft support knowledge db issue 810881 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881

I have no idea how intellij gets to create this directory (and IdeaProjects, too btw) with the wrong user id, but following the resolution hinted above on both the .IntelliJIdea90 and the IdeaProjects folders (i.e. turn simple sharing off; take over ownership recursively) will make the problem go away. Maybe this bit of information can help you find the underlying problem. Until then, this hopefully gives others who fail like OP a workaround.

Oh yeah, this is on windows xp (5.1.2600 aka xp pro v2002 SP 3)

Please delete the contents of %USERPROFILE%\.IntelliJIdea11\system\caches and try starting IntelliJ IDEA again.

It's already empty. Yet it doesn't work.

Your exception can be caused by a corrupted installation. Please make sure that you don't install IntelliJ IDEA 11.1.3 and 12 into the same folder and don't add the bin directory of the IntelliJ IDEA installation to the system PATH. If you didn't do any of that, then please try reinstalling IntelliJ IDEA 11.1.3.

Reinstall works. But wanted to let you know about the issue.
