Can idea.exe be configured to run JDK 6?

I know you can set the JDK in the .bat file under Windows, and I also know, from
Maxim that the EAP version of the .exe had the JRE search order fixed such that
you could not specify JDK/JRE 6 as the JRE for IDEA.

So, can this be done now that IDEA 6 is out?

Cheers,

Bonny

Unfortunately I don't have a direct answer for your question however I wanted to comment about IDEA's performance and stability running under jdk1.6. I've been running IDEA 6 under the latest JDK 1.6 binary release for some time and I've found it to be surprisingly stable and solid performer. The only hiccup I can think of is very occassionally I see redraw corruption when IDEA regains focus after switching from another application that is solved by resizing IDEA.

Unfortunately, JDK 1.6 does seems to have issues (and perhaps 1.5 does still too) when the window resizes under it. For example, I often code in the morning using remote desktop on my laptop with one screen size (1280x800) and in the afternoon switch to my desktop (1600x1200 on primary monitor). Doing this I almost always have to restart IDEA as the JDK seems to fail to refresh the screen after the switch.

I didn't manage to do it, I think idea.exe refuses to use beta jdk's.

You have to use the idea.bat file for jdk6.

Taras,

This works with the .bat file but not with the .exe - well, at least not when the
public installed version is JDK5 and is first on the path (and is the one used
by our projects development), even if JDK_HOME and IDEA_JDK are specified
and point to JDK 6.

This is a bit inconsistent and I would have liked the .exe to behave like the .bat
in this regard. Whilst the default behaviour is not to work with unreleased JDKs
it has always been possible to try IDEA on a beta JDK.

JB: will you reconsider reenabling the search step that looks at IDEA_JDK/JDK_HOME in the .exe?

JB: can you please reenable the searching for JDK/JRE in the .exe the same way it's done using the .bat?
