Evaluating PHPStorm/IntelliJ IDEA10 help

Hello everyone,

I am evaluating the two trying to decide which to go with.  I do lots of PHP web site work but am also working on a large javascript application that uses EXT JS.

I don't know if its because I have the community version of IDEA10, but I have been very impressed with PHP Storm, and when I look for what I like in PHPStorm many times I have trouble getting IDEA10 to do the same thing, even though supposedly it is the more complete IDE.

One example that has me perplexed, I can open a javascript file in PHPStorm, and the Structure window nicely fills up with all my functions, however, opening the same file in IDEA10 I get a message in the structure window saying that there is nothing to show.

I know thats not a lot of info to go on, but is there something simply I might be missing?

Thanks, and any advice very much appreciated.

Hello,

Am I right assuming that you compare PhpStorm with IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition? The Community Edition doesn't support javascript, but Ultimate Edition does (feel free to check the comparison matrix).

Basically, Ultimate Edition contains all those language-specific IDEs (PhpStorm, RubyMine, PyCharm etc) as plugins, i.e. you get the exact same functionality. The difference is price, i.e. PhpStorm costs less than UE and you don't need the later if you don't need support for, say, ruby, python etc. Another difference is that, potentially, the products (IJ UE and PhpStorm) can have difference release cycles (feel free to check existing releases timeline).

Thank you! Somehow I thought the only free trial was of the CE but I found the one for Ultimate.

You are welcome :)

Just to make things clear, Community Edition is free, i.e. you can download and use it without any restrictions.

Ultimate Edition (as all other IntelliJ platform-based IDEs like PhpStorm, WebStorm, RubyMine, PyCharm etc) has a three thirty days trial.
