xml struct view always opens first node additionally

... even if you (only) want to expand a node in the middle.

open an xml file, go to structure view, then use the + symbol to open nodes. now assume you have a list of subnode with the same tagname. try to expand a node in the middle of the list -> the first in list is also opened.
