Actually from the 5.x, which would normally be the next rev, most folks who
bought 5.0 would not pay for an update, so I think it spells less copies
than what a major release is... but I don't work there, so I don't know

I've been thinking about this quite a bit recently. I think several months
work in just closing bugs and fixing existing features would go a LONG way
in making IntelliJ an outstanding product. I just hate to see new features
(and thus new bugs) piled on top of code that usually works for the most
part.

Off the top of my head, improvements are important for
- formatter (so I can trust my enter key, refactorings, and intentions again)
- on-demand import, whose shortcomings irritate me daily
- focus problems (not focus stealing), and delays which prevent me from
working smoothly (sometimes I have to click back into the editor
after invoking an intention, for example)
And some new features which I believe are the logical next step in IDEA's editor,
- an inline rich text editor (for comments and javadoc)
- drag and drop refactoring (to extract variable, method, etc with a
simple ctrlaltdrag or something)
- inline ("live") refactoring (like live-template-style rename)

There was talk at one point, and I'm pretty sure my request is still in Jira,
to have like a thread queue model for different things we do in IDEA. So
say you're updating some code from svn, and you want to at the same time
search for some text, or run and ant task. What I was hoping for is to have
a queue where you can set off all these things and they would be queued up
and taken care of as the IDE is able to get to them. THis way I can search
for some text, then set off a second search for something else, then while
that's going on, do a pull up refactoring.
Also I would love to see the popup statuses for progress meters go away,
put them in a status pane, and allow for multiple progress meters where we
can set off multiple threads at the same time. Those popups are annoying,
and often end up stealing away the focus from being on another app, or even
in idea.

Oh yeah and while editing speed has improved, I think more work can be done
especially when it comes to xml, jsp and html type files.

No, please. We've been burned like this before. I hope JetBrains didn't listen that much to it's users. Really, I'm serious. I'm seriously inclined to believe, and deeply hope that JetBrains design and development team is A LOT more qualified to decide how to improve IDEA than us. Sorry, but they're are the geniuses, not you, and certainly not me.
Granted, the knowledge barrier between providers (JetBrains) and receivers (us) in IDEA's case is much lower than the usual. We're quite close, and I'm sure there are some developers among us as good as the JetBrains people, if not better. Those are, however, just a small fraction of IDEA's user base, and JetBrains knows who they are. I'll gladly let JetBrains decide what's best for IDEA. They have the best team working for them, and the best supporters a company could ask for.
... of course, nothing I said above stops me from rambling in these forums. Bring out Demetra's wish list so we can start fighting over features again :)
A little bird tells me that there will some new advanced refactorings released as a commercial third-party plugin very shortly...

Let's not start the add every possible technology thing again. Aren't there
2 plugins already for this stuff? Maybe if they're not adequate a better
request would be to improve the plugin API to allow folks to write better
plugins.

Plugins support only basic functionality not advanced. All commerical
IDEs (JDev, Netbeans, Eclipse + myeclipseide ...) support the struts development.
