What does "Searching for VERSION" mean?

Sometimes when I compile a project, IDEA says "Searching for VERSION". Unfortunately it says that for a very, very long time. There is a progress text that runs from 0% to 99% and then starts again from 0% - again and again.

First of all it would be nice to know what IDEA is doing. The dialog is far from helpful.

Also I wonder if it is really supposed to take that long. On my PowerBook G4 I once gave it something like 10 minutes before killing the IDEA process. After restarting IDEA and recompiling from scratch, everything goes smoothly.
