complaining about IDEA's UI
I do not want to sound rude - so first let me congratulate to the fresh IDEA 5.0 ;)
... but: Am I the only one who thinks the UI is a partially a little bit uglyish / or at least somehow space-wasting?
e.g. see idea.jpg: I do not like the big border around the textfield inside the combobox.
see idea2.jpg: why the big borders everywhere?
I'm quite sure you know the style guide from JGoodies about redundant borders etc.
... could be improved, IMHO

I haven't yet began to use Irida. Still judging from the few test runs the Alloy IDEA theme is not that 'space wasting'. You can always 'fall back' to old Pallada theme if you like.
IMHO space wasting has always been a big problem in Idea (e.g. : the tab
bar)

ah yes, indeed - I was not aware that the L&F could be changed - thanks for the information. I'll try it with the IDEA4.5 default ;)
Sureley I like the combobox from that L&F better.

Funnily enough, the tab bar is one thing that's been changed in IDEA 5 (at least on my screen) to make better use of space. Thanks for that!
One the other hand, I tend to agree with the comments about borders. Certainly Karsten (JGoodies) is the guru master of Java UI asthetics. His "metamorphosis" demo application is a classic.

In my experience, the skin has a huge effect on the amount of space wasted. Tabs are a good example where you can see this. The Idea 4.5 skin as FAR more space efficient than the Motif skin. Although you can trim down the space the Motif skin uses by adjusting it's font.
