Tomcat integration not deploying manager app?

So in my new job they use Maven (don't start, you lot...) but I'd like to use the integrated debugging for my dev Tomcat server even though I won't build with IDEA. I have it set up as a run profile, but when I run Tomcat via IDEA, it doesn't start the manager app, which our Maven script uses for things like deploying. I'm probably doing something stupid but I have no idea what. When I run the same command (the default, tomcat/bin/catalina.bat run) from the command line it works fine.

Donuts exchanged for solutions.

Oh, and this is with 3354, in case it matters.

Anyone? This is driving me crazy, and it means I can't use the Tomcat integration on my project....

Colin, IDEA use an automatically generated tomcat configuration that only includes the applications selected for deployment. So yeah, I think you're out of luck on this one.

There are a lot of other problems too: for example, I frequently need tomcat to use a handcrafted context.xml file, which is not under META-INF (and should not be; this is a deployment-time configuration, not development time).

I rarely use IDEA's local tomcat integration: I run tomcat manually, (catalina jpda start) and later connect to the remote debugger.

Thanks for the response, that's actually the configuration I've ended up with too. Shame about the lack of integration, not that it matters too much I guess...
