3273 Editor slow?

The java editor seems very slow in #3273, even on small classes.
It even has that good old 'memory' effect: keep a key pressed for a
while and release it, and the editor will keep doing things for almost
half a second.

Is it just me or are other people seeing this?

Thanks,

Vince.

I have been seeing slowness, not just in 3273 but in older builds.

I really notice a slowness if I cut multiple lines by pressing CTRLD repeatedly and then paste it, or reformat a line at a time by pressing SHIFTTAB.

There is a large difference between IDEA 4.5.4 and Irida builds for me. I was forced to switch back to 4.5.4 for work due to the performance, even though I would rather use Irida builds.

Yep, the editor seems to be slower in the latest builds. May be due to new features ... Anyway, it's slower.

Here is one example of the difference between IDEA 4.5.3
and Iridia (3273). All tests were run on a P4 2.8 Ghz
Windows XP SP2 desktop.

In my editor, I start pressing CTRL+D to delete a number of
lines. In total, I press CTRL+D 10 times in about 2-3
seconds.

With IDEA 4.5.3, there is minimal lag between each keypress
and the line being deleted. After 10 CTRL+D, IDEA is still
keeping up.

With Iridia 3273, the first couple CTRL+D are handled
immediately, but on the 3rd keypress IDEA hangs. Even after
I am done typing the 10 CTRL+Ds, IDEA doesn't catch up for
a another few seconds. In total, it takes IDEA Irida 3273
seven seconds to finally delete the remaining lines.

I would really like to know what is causing IDEA Irida
to pause for several seconds while doing repeated
keypresses.

The obvious suspect would be the autoreparse/error
hilighting. I compared my settings between 4.5.3 and
Irida and found I had autoreparse delay set to 500ms
for both. Irida does have more warnings on by default.
To make an apples to apples comparison, I created a
new error hilighting profile "4.5.3Default" which only
contained the warnings enabled in 4.5.3. But this didn't
change Irida behavior.

Finally, I set the autoreparse delay to some huge number,
e.g. 10000 msec. But even that had no effect. So, I
guess something else is causing Irida to pause.

Here is another example where I reformat 10 lines by
holding down the SHIFT+TAB key. All Tests done on P4 2.8
Ghz Windows XP SP2. Video captures at 10 frames/second.

In 4.5.3, the reindent and move to next line happens very
fast, and it keeps up with the keypresses, so that when I
release the SHIFT+TAB it is already done. Finished in less
than one second. (8 frames).

In Irida 3273, IDEA pauses after reidenting 1 lines, and
then after 1+ seconds more, the other lines are updated in
two batches. Finished in more than two seconds (24 frames).

Again, Irida takes about 2X the time to complete the
editing operation, and it appears even slower because it is
updating in chunks.

It might be worthwhile to attach the files directly to the ticket :)

And contrary to popular belief, a CPU and memory snapshot will be worth more than a thousand videos ;)
