The features of Whibey are really so incredibly compelling that to not embrace Whidbey asap is to be left in the dust.
There are several software initiaves I was starting and had hopes of selling, but MS frankly handles them far better than I had endeavored to (e.g. objectspaces, two-way binding, web parts, master pages, master/detail controls)
So Whidbey support will be critical.
Wherever I work I hope they'll shell out more $$ on top of VS.NET, but it's hard to say, depends on their budget.
But for us independent workers, requiring VS.NET will be a killer - we'll end up with nothing.
Not if you can do your best to ensure that the plugin still works when added on to say Visual C# distribution of VS.NET, that's sweet. Their price point for this has been about $100, so I see how I could manage to spend about another $100 for the IntelliJ plugin if it's all I hope it will be.
When will the EAP for the VS plug-in open? I NEED the features now after switching from Java to C# some months ago. VS is not usable enough, and after getting used to IntelliJ I feel like I am using an IDE from the dino age.
Believe me, my whole company will embrace your new product if it is as good as IntelliJ.

You're trolling, right? MS has not been the be all end all solution before and it won't become one in the future.
MS presence in the mobile market is still ridiculously small compared to other big players. And those other big players will want to keep that area M$ free at all costs. Server side is still more java land than .NET land. It's still more than two years to next MS platform, who knows what kind of killer features will IDEA (and Java) have by then? =)
BTW: have you looked at the tiobe index lately to see how nicely C# has been growing (-0.66% in last 12 months)? http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm

My comments regarding Whidbey are in relation to what Whidbay offers versus the current release.
So if you're already a .NET 1.1 advocate, then my statement stands, and the list of specific features upon which my opinion is based is right there... allowing people who have already educated themselves to make their own educated decisions.

I love refactoring and I love intellij and would die to get the same functionality when I'm coding C# in VS.NET.
It's a plugin that adds part of IDEA functionality to VS.NET and work with C# language. Later we'll make a standalone IDE with much richer functionality.

Check out sharptools and the freeware components from Morrison Schwartz, they have a plugin that is extensible for the .net IDE and they have a component for creating your own plugins http://www.ms-inc.net/Products.aspx
to C#/VS.NET, I'm really missing a lot of the features IDEA had previously

100% agree. I'm in the exactly the same situation and I'm counting the days
for the eap release.
The Optimize Imports tool would also be a nice addition.
One thing I really need is a new Class view.
The class view / solution explorer in VS 2003 is really bad.
Also it could be nice with:
- Matching braces highlighting (REALLY NEED THIS)
- Ctrl + mouse click (GoTo definition)
- Code formatter
- Easy generation of Property's
- Import Assistant
- Intelligent error highlighting
- Auto-insertion of closing brace
- Live Templates
- Find usage
- Parameter Info
- Surrounding of selected code fragment with try/catch
