Idea-10.0.1 takes more and more CPU time until 100%

Hello!

I have some problems with Idea-10.0.1 (had the same issue with 9.0.4).
The problem is that Idea takes more and more CPU time (without apparently doing anything), until a CPU core is under 100% load.
If I leave Idea running for the whole night the machine is for sure 100% loaded in the morning.

I ran the same version on Solaris and Windows without this issue.

This is my system:
-----------------------------
Hypervisor: VMware ESXi 4.1.0 (build: 260247)
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit - fully patched (virtual host with VMTools)
JDK running Idea: Sun 1.6.0_22 (tried both 32bit and 64bit versions)
vCPU: 4 core, x64
Memory: 2,5 GiB
Idea plugins:

  • Clover
  • Directory compare

Have anybody seen this problem?

Best regards,

Morten,

That behavior suggests that you're close to running out of heap space. Under certain scenarios, not all that uncommon, the collector keeps trying harder and harder to reclaim space and uses a lot of CPU in the process.

You should try increasing the maximum heap limit to see if the symptom is alleviated.

Hello!

Can it really be the problem?
I have two projects open in two windows.
I am using the default 'idea.vmoptions:-Xmx512m' setting.
The tooltip for the memory usage in the bottom-right corner is:

Window 1: Allocated heap size 129M, used 91M (Max: 455M)

Window 2: Allocated heap size 129M, used 102M (Max: 455M)

So I do not guess I am running out of heap space?
Am I missing something or can it be another problem?

PS: I will try to increase the max heap size to 1G and come back with the result.

Hello Morten,

The best way to diagnose such problems is to capture and send us a CPU snapshot,
as described in http://devnet.jetbrains.net/docs/DOC-192

Hello all!

Problem has been solved! The problem was not in Idea directly but in one of the enabled plugins.
I have enabled the Clover plugin and set it to auto refresh the Clover data every 2 sec. This seems to be the problem.
When disabling the auto refresh feature the problem with 100% CPU usage disappeared.
