IDEA acronym? Follow
Someone asked me if IDEA stood for an acronym... did not see anything
on the site, I was wondering if it stood for maybe IntelliJ Integrated
Development Environment Application?

I have always thought that it's a play on words that (1) it's an IDE, and
(2) "idea" is a nice sounding word which contains "IDE".

You can pull your tongue out of your cheek, because it is
not funny anymore. Eclipse got mature, better, and it is
free. Eclipse model is "get workbench, buy tools". A bunch
of plugins which are sold for Eclipse, it is the
marketplace. All because of the idea (pun intended) of
plugin-based IDE. We can see how it works. IDEA has plugin
API too, but it seems as more of a bolt-on solution. It was

Make GUI designer a plugin and sell it separately, and lower

If IntelliJ do not change their pricing policy and do not
provide total modularization, IDEA will extinct. Now you can
call this FUD.
P.S. Who am I, I do not have my own software company yet.
But I will hate to see IntelliJ demise.
I agree that IntelliJ has less of the clear edge it had a year ago.
Eclipse is learning fast and in a recent "getting updated" trial I did
with it I was impressed by some of the new stuff and the progress rate
(and in several occasions feature copy) that they have done.
I didn't take it eventually, but unlike 2.5 years ago, when I chose a
Java IDE for the company I worked for, now my choice to stay with
IntelliJ is at least in part due to my familiarity with IntelliJ. There
are other factors, but a year ago and definitely 2.5 years ago in my
opinion, for our specific needs at my workplace, there was no comparison
between anything an IntelliJ and now there is, at least in the feature
by feature comparison (which I think is misleading, but people like to
do it).
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with any IDE or company. I love IntelliJ
and I too hate to see some of its coming of age illnesses hinder its
bright future.

A great model indeed Michael. Give me an editor for free, let me add
what I want, the more I need the more I'd better afford. I'd buy that
(pun intended)

P.S. Indeed Eclipse is not funny anymore, 3.1 M4 is scary clean.
All of my hope is on kick-ass JSP, .js and CSS support.
Add drag-n-drop JSF and even better EJB support and I will think I won
the lottery. :)

And did you ever try using Eclipse (3.0 stable) together with MyEclipse? It's a remarkably low cost solution (MyEclipse costs $31.75 for one year) for great functionality.
My only peeve with Eclipse right now is real state use and interface usability in general. If the eclipse guys learn something about keyborad shortcuts and individually retractable views, well... It's sad to think what could happen.
