Project files differ between IDEA 8 and IDEA 9

Who the heck had the stupid idea to let IDEA 9 write project files
differently than IDEA 8? Having project files (.idea/modules.xml, .iml)
under version control using IDEA 8 and IDEA 9 in one team is impossible,
because then the files always are marked as changed!

Could you please stay polite?

Tom, are you new to computer world?

cause a lot of programs have same behavior: with major version change -> config files format also changes
most of programs at first start of new version automatically converts config file format to new version and then you cannot start older version at all

if IDEA allows you to start IDEA 8 on configs from IDEA 9
then I think it shouldn't
it should show error 'You required newer version of IDEA to open this project'

I'm not talking about IDEA config files, I'm talking about project files
which usually are stored in the project's version control.

I'm sorry for having used an aggressive tone in my initial posting. I
apologize again officially here.

Hello Tom,

Could you please send the diffs of the .iml and modules.xml files between
IDEA 9 and IDEA X? Changing the project file storage format is almost never
intended, and is usually a consequence of some refactoring.

Hi Dmitry, I was referring to IDEA 8 and 9, not X.

Hello Tom,

I'm afraid it's too late to do anything about that. Even if we do find the
possibility to backport some fixes to IDEA 9, this will create churn in the
project files of the users who're upgrading from 9.0.3 to 9.0.4.

Hi Dmitry, I was referring to IDEA 8 and 9, not X.
