Open existing Ruby or PHP projects in IDEA

I have IDEA and need to work in Java (which it's great for), Ruby and PHP/HTML often within the same week/day.I have the ruby plugin installed and that's seems to work fine.

My problem is that I can't find a way of bringing in an existing project (Ruby, Rails, PHP) into IDEA. It doesn't seem to have the equivalent of 'Open Directory' that RubyMine has. Which effectively means that IDEA is useless to me as for these projects, unless I use RubyMine to open it first (thus creating the .idea files).

Does anyone know how to achieve this in IDEA? (without rubymine, phpstorm etc)?

Thanks
Gerwood

IntelliJ currently has no fast open directory like RubyMine or PHPStorm, this is probably because of the different way RubyMine and PHPStorm treat projects, each of them is targeted towards a specific language and their projects are automatically set for that language while IntelliJ uses more advanced projects that can use more than one language and are based on modules.

In order to open folders as projects you must create a new project and module for each of them, if you have the Ruby plugin installed you will find a Ruby module when creating the project however PHP doesn't have a module at the moment(I hope it will someday for specific PHP projects). Create a new project and choose "Create Java project from existing sources", pick the folder you want from there and set up the rest of the project, you can pick any module for PHP projects as it doesn't really matter, even grails and such it will work, as a matter of fact for opening PHP projects i just go to new and import existing grails/griffon application since all the needed features for working with PHP are there, Ruby on the other hand won't work so easy. You should read the help on projects and modules to find more about them and how they are handled in IntelliJ.

This could be a much wanted feature request, now wit PyCharm coming out IntelliJ has all the features needed for each and every other language, it should stop being a "java targeted" IDE, we need some easy importing for each languag.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I agree this would be a great feature request.

+1.  It's maddeningly confusing to have the editor do nothing.  The directory doesn't open and there's no error.
