Fabrique will be part of Idea?!

At least that's how I understand the blog in the onboard publication:
http://www.onboard.jetbrains.com/weblog/

That's great news: The one time I tried Fabrique I found its visual designers very appealing, but when it got to code it fell far behind Idea.

Any more details? Will this be an extension to buy separately? Will this be part of the Irida EAP?

Yep. Can hardly wait.... :)

I'm assuming you will have to pay for it as an addition to IDEA since it seems to me that JB have put far too much work into this for it to be a free plugin.

I'd be willing to pay a nominal fee for it but anything over 50e would probably count me out, guess we'll just have to wait for the pricing policy.

Currently I'm just really excited for the plugin to be released under EAP as, having used the standalone EAP, I'm really intrigued as to how they've integrated it into IDEA (I'm hoping for deep integration rather than simply launching Fabrique from within IDEA).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Fabrique IDE will be bundled, either natively or as a plugin, with IDEA 5.0. You'll still need to purchase a license to deploy the server -side runtime components, n'est pas?

Ahh I didn't realise they were planning to separate the two, I was under the impression that if you have the IDE componant then you also have the license to deploy whatever you create using it.

I'm not on the Fabrique team, so my information may not be fully correct,
but as far as I understand, the situation is different. I don't think you
will need to purchase a deployment license, but Visual Fabrique will not
be a free part of IDEA 5.0. It is indeed a plugin for IDEA, but you will
need to download and purchase it separately, and the price will be more in
the price range of IDEA itself than the 50e someone mentioned in this threa.

Sounds fair enough to me. If folk don't need it, then there's no reason for them to be charged for it; or have it taking up space in memory.

Thanks for the info Dmitry. It's a shame about the potential price (well for me anyway) as I probably will not be able to convince my company to fork out the same money for a plugin as they do for an IDE. If there was a personal edition available for around $100 I could probably justify biting the bullet on it myself, but if it costs the same as IDEA (i.e. $499) it could unfortunately preclude me from buying it.

That is purely a personal issue though, commercially I don't think that pricing it the same as IDEA will hurt take-up much at all since the majority of companies using J2EE will probably not balk too much at the cost.

The price is not set yet. We need to progress in the EAP first, then see
what the situation is. Changing the strategy from standalone to plugin
might change the pricing strategy, but anyway, it will be up to Eugene,
Sergey, and Valentin to decide.

Thanks Rob, though from what I could see in the old-style Fabrique EAP I see no reason why you couldn't charge a similar price for it as you do for IDEA, the quality certainly looks like it will be there. Obviously I'm just hopeful from a personal perspective that the plugin status brings it down a little, however I have no doubt that once EAP has finished people will be lining up to purchase it even if it does cost the same as IDEA.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Dmitry.

I think they should charge extra for Fabrique (if it includes full web
services and JSF support). However, I think the plugin idea may not be
the best idea. What other plugin costs that much? I think a better
idea is to have IntelliJ and IntelliJ Professional.

Some other name differential. Either way, you are talking less than $1K
and that would have the same functionality as the competition, but still
cost less than them.

Or maybe just increase the price of IntelliJ. Even at $600, it would be
by far the cheapest professional IDE.

I think their primary intent is adoption of their framework, and if you look
around this list, no one will pay $600+ for idea just to have fabrique... At
least it doesn't seem like it.

If they can get adoption, then they can raise the fees, but I think they're
doing the right thing by practically giving it away to get more people to
use it... Same thing happened with IDEA, I think they're carrying lessons
learned forward.

There was something floating around about Fabrique Framework being developed as an open source project. So, anyone could theoritically use Fabrique for their projects, free of charge. JetBrains would get money not from the framework, but from the tool: Visual Fabrique.

Fabrique business plans seems to have changed a lot, however, and I don't know if the above is still valid.
