Editing hidden files on Os X

I am running IntelliJ Community Edition 9.0.2 on Os X 10.6.4. I would like to open the file $HOME/.m2/settings.xml for editing, but it does not seem that there is any way to access the "hidden" directory ".m2".

What am I missing?

I found out how to open the settings.xml file:

In  the "Maven Projects" window, right-click the name of your project, then choose "open 'settings.xml'" from the pop-up menu.

This still does not help me to open other hidden files in Os X though, so if anyone knows how, an answer would be helpful.
