IDEA 9 seemindly randomly freezing and taking 100% cpu (on one my cores only)

I am havinga problem where IDEA 9 seemindly randomly freezing and taking 100% cpu (on one my cores only) for 15-20 minutes then eventually gives an out of memory message.  If I cannot resolve it I must roll back to IDEA 8 ASAP.  What should I do to get the needed debug info to the jetbrains intellij support?

Hi!

I am having the same problem, however I don't such a high CPU usage.

I am running Mac OS X Leopard. Problem happens with default memory settings and increasing memory does not make any difference.

Any ideas?

Roberto

Feel free to bump those threads as well.

There have been no replies from JetBrains so far. That's the strange part... So far, for other issues, support has been awesome and quick, only this performance issue remains alarmingly unanswered. Maybe it's the holidays and the Czech booze

JetBrains, can you help us get this fixed?

The IntelliJ IDEA development team is located in Russia, and here the official
holidays are January 1 to 10th. You may experience delayed response times
during that period. :)

Morning,
As a side note, the support team is fantastic and very prompt in replying to your support ticket.

The CPU usage issue you are experiencing, as mentioned, is not new with Maia on the Mac. I too experience numerous CPU usage problems primarily associated with CVS.
There were a few small adjustments that have been documented here in the forums and I personally perform with each new release. I e-mailed support to verify if these tweaks are still necessary but they said no and that they are no longer necessary.

The known tweaks are:
1) Change the JVM settings in the plist file, including changing the JVM to 1.6 and making sure MaxPermSize is greater than 250. (This has already been changed in the newer releases and setting the jvm to 1.6 shouldn't matter).

2) Update the Contents/MacOS/idea file; delete it and replace it with the current java stub file ( I have documented this in another forum, but the command is
     "sudo cp /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub /Applications/Maia-IU-93.67.app/Contents/MacOS/idea"
     - This changed made the primary difference for me with teh initial Maia releases. Performing this update may help.).
I hope this may help.
Cheers
Jeffrey

Dmitry,

Any updates on thsi issue?

I'm running IDEA Ultimate Personal v9.02 under Windows XP SP2 and have encountered similar behavior as described in this thread. However, my dual-core CPUs are pegging at ~50% and IDEA becomes unresponsive, not even repainting itself when a window opened over it is closed. The first couple of times it happened today, I waited about 5 minutes and it returned to normal. The last time, I waited 15 minutes and finally had to kill the IDEA process.

I didn't capture data on this, but will do so next time unless a fix is imminent.

Thanks!

Jack

Hi,

I am experiencing a similar issue - have been running it successfully for weeks and yesterday it started hanging (100% CPU).  It comes back (took all night) but as soon as I press any key, it hangs again.  It seems to be affecting the error analyis in some way - I have some classes that have not had the import statements added for them and when the freeze is occuring, the pop-up of 'Import this class' never shows up.  I have cleared the caches, re-created my project (a fairly small one at that).

Running 9.0.2 on Ubuntu 9.10 with JDK 1.6.0_19

Please find thread dump attached.

Cheers,

Johan

An update on this - I tinkered with the plugins loaded and narrowed it down to the spell-checking plugin.  As soon as I enable the plugin and try to edit the file (in any way actually), IntelliJ hangs.  Disabling it again, all is well.  Now, I can live without spell checking of course, but it does come in handy at times.

Cheers,

Johan
