One last desperate try...

As someone once said, "I know this has been talked to death, but...."

Is JetBrains seriously intending to release 4.5 without a way to disable
so-called productivity hints? If so, consider this one last desperate
plea for a return to sanity (and for the sovereign right of users to
control how they do their own work).

If not, "never mind."

The number and intensity of these complaints is a good indication that for some people, the hints are an unwanted intrusion. I find the messages helpful when they stay up long enough and I am inclined to read them, but I can understand how some folks would find them disturbing.

People respond to stimulation very differently and developers should respect complaints like these, even if they do not understand them. There should be a way to turn off the extraneous information.

I absolutely agree! Please give us a possibility to disable these
intrusing and distracting 'hints'. They're of no use at all for me,
they're just annoying and disturbing!

I found the hints interesting at first, but now I really don't want to see them anywhere. I guess I don't mind them at startup.

It's a nice feature for new users, but you have to have an option to turn it off. I have several shareware software which cost $10 to $30 which also have the hints or "tip of the day" dialog, and all of them are courteous enough to have an option to turn them off.

I can't really understand you. When these hints pop up for you. For me,
they only pop up, when a long running progress dialog occurs, e.g. at
project loading. What's wrong with displaying hints at that time?

To me nothing. I got used to them.

1.) It consumes too much screen real estate, hiding the piece of code
I'm currently working on. I prefer looking at my code and thinking about
my next change than to read some well-known feature descriptions.

2.) It changes the location of the important information (i.e. the
progress bar, the compiled module name, etc.) in the midst of the
operation, which is annoying and distracting.

3.) If an operation is just one second longer than the hint timeout, the
operation is delayed by opening and immediately closing again the hints
window. Happens quite often to me and causes a noticeable extra delay
without any use.

4.) It treats me as a dumb novice junior programmer which must be taught
about some basic features I'm already using for years. I do like
productivity hints - as long as I can get rid of them as soon as they
disturb more than they help.

+1 don't like them

+1 I agree 100%

It is very dissappointing, though, that JetBrains doesn't even comment on this issue.

Holy moley! It IS possible to toggle the hints off!

I just downloaded 2187 and in Help / Productivity Guide there are two checkboxes: Show hints while compiling and Show hints during other long tasks.

The place to modify these certainly isn't the most intuitive one, but I won't complain.. :)

I need different productivity hints:
Make a tracker entry for everything that changed. For example I have missed these options to turn hints off. The build announcements say "View complete list of changes here..." - so that's my best source of information for new features.

Phew! And as a bonus, the table of data on the dialog makes interesting
reading.

When the dialog hides your code?

This is correct, the hints I am getting are no news. But who knows,
maybe there is a hidden secret, which I haven't found in the last 3 years ;)

When the dialog hides your code?

During compile there's only a little region hidden, leaving me enough
room to glimpse at the code behind it. But as soon as the hints appear,
the dialog box is ways bigger, covering almost the whole editor.

I don't want to exaggerate on that, but it's a fact that I get
distracted by that.

That's correct, maybe even I can still learn something - I didn't stop
hoping... And for this reason I read the productivity hints from time to
time, in some spare time when I decide it, not when I'm forced by IDEA. :)

But never mind. As Markus has figured out there is in fact a possibility
to disable the hints. I'm developing with pleasure again.

I compile always in background...

IMHO compiling in background always should be the default. Jetbrains, is
there a reason for not compiling always in background?

Maybe you're right, I'll give it a try. Until now I always compiled in
foreground. Maybe I'm just too lazy to change the default... :)

Personally I find them just as distracting as the compile window WITHOUT
the hints. When I do a long build or something that tends to kick
them in I take a breather, rest my eyes, drink my coffee, or check email.

To each their own thou :)

Maybe IDEA needs a new hint to tell you how to turn off hints :)

Mmmm what the hell low-res are you running at?

And it should be the last hint. So one is forced to read all hints
before knowing how to disable them... :)

I've harped on this for years now (although not too often recently). I've never understood why JetBrains thinks people would rather have Idea take over prevent them from coding what's on their mind and instead stare at a uselesss modal progress dialog. Same goes with ant builds.

Thank you, JetBrains! My faith is restored. (Now about that code mark-up
bug I reported against build 9-something that still isn't fixed....)

Hehe, looks like one of the hints should be that you can shut off the hints!
