Build very slow

I'm running IDEA 8.1.3 and am working on a small project.
When I build the project (Ctrl+F9) it takes a very long time.

For example, right now I've made a change (added a blank line) to a class that has about 140 lines.
I started the build and it spent 30 minutes with the "Make" status and has now switched status
to "Synchronizing output directory ...".

I'd like to find out why the build is so slow and can provide more information when needed.

Help!
Kevin.

Are you running anything else CPU intensive simultaneously? e.g. Firefox
can sometimes be a CPU hog without you realising.
Have you disabled your antivirus for java/class files?

You can find some common causes and solutions here: http://www.jetbrains.net/devnet/docs/DOC-192

The CPU has very low utilization of around 11%.
During the build it goes up to around 22%.

I haven't done anything with the anti-virus settings as that is somewhat off-limits around here.

I've just written an ant build file that just does the compile step and it only takes 10 seconds
when I run it from IDEA.  It is less convenient for sure but better than waiting 30 minutes!

Thanks for your help,
Kevin.
