Personal Licences
Will there be a Personal Licence for 4.x available as an Easter Special this year? (BTW, when is Easter in Russia?)
My company will not pay for any IDE more expensive than Eclipse, and I am considering buying a personal copy if it is not too expensive.
BTW, I found out that my company has a really weird policy regarding licences: I am allowed to participate in an IDEA EAP using a free EAP licence, but the policy does not allow me to use IDEA with a personal licence. However, I would be willing to take the risk and ignore that policy in this case ... anything is better than having to use Eclipse!

Jens

Did they give any reasons for why they won't allow you to use IDEA with a personal license? It's more than odd they are happy for you to work with an EAP or beta product which could potentially have bugs that could propagate in your code but yet they wont allow you to use a stable version of the same product.
I could understand them not allowing you to use the EAP or not allowing you to use IDEA at all (because it isn't their corporate standard) but allowing you to use an unstable product (not to mention one with a time limit on it) and not the stable version of the same product is not only ridiculous policy it's a downright dangerous business decision.
The policy is that we developers are allowed (even encouraged) to evaluate any kind of software that could potentially be useful for us which - by the interpretation of my boss - includes participation in an EAP.
However, as soon as it comes to using stable versions of software, we have to comply with the corporate standard in the respective area - which for Java IDEs is (unfortunately) Eclipse. I tried to argue about this a few times, but our company is just a small wheel in a large corporation, so there's not much we can do (except ignore the standard and try not to get caught).

Jens
Why don't you just sell it like you still have further evaluation to do but your EAP license time has expired and you need to run a time-unlimited evaluation due to the vast depth of the product?? :)
well, I've had similar issue, ended up buying personal licence. Now they started to integrate whole product into eclipse, however, I don't care anymore cause I left them..now, that last sentence is a hint..;-)

As much as I love IDEA I'm not sure that a company not using it would be the defining factor as to whether I worked for them or not!! :) lol
sure ;)
but..Idea will always have it's little tiny part in it ;)
but honestly, although that wasn't playing any parts in my case (as I was free to pay for it and use it) if I would be forced to use certain editor just because managment decided to do so, especially if it's slowing me down, or annoying me in any way, I would make very big deal out of it...although, I guess if you have kids to feed, it's different story...
Hello Jens,
Yes, it will be there at Easter time.

Oh I did the same when I got my current job the first thing I did was put in my request for IDEA... but I wouldn't say no to a well paid job just because they wouldn't let me have it. :)
