Is EAP over?
Howdy,
I've used IDEA for several years now, but when I switched companies, I didn't have a license anymore. Sadly, I've been using the EAP program to keep developing in IDEA until I could convince my new company to get me a license. However, I can't get into IDEA, as of this morning... and I read that the Aurora program isn't active now that 4.0 is out.
So... my question is... Am I out of luck? Is there no more Aurora or eval process? Do I have to go back to JBuilder?
Help!
Curtiss.

Well, keep in mind that it is not always about cost. Sometimes, it's about a standard IDE or cost sunk.
I joined a development team that had already purchased Together J for each developer. Just try and convince management to buy another IDE after dropping that cash. Well, I eventually did, but not for awhile...so I just bought my own license in the interim. It was a small price to pay to "develop with pleasure" :) JetBrains rocks for making the personal license affordable and usable for commercial purposes. I actually had 4 or 5 other developers follow my lead. It built such enthusiasm for the product that we now own dozens of corporate IJ licenses.
cheers,
Steve
Oh yes, btw...my real message...buy a personal license! :)
What is a 'personal' version? I don't see that on their my page... I'm sure I'm just missing it...
And, yes, it's not so much about cost as it is about 'cost sunk'. The company has already spent $4k per seat in JBuilder, they will tell me to make it work.
Curtiss.
Sadly, the "Personal" license has historically only been available for about
30 days beginning in late December of each year.
I really wish that they would make it available all year long!

Dang. Sorry. Perhaps the IntelliJ Gods on the board will take pity and offer you a secret link to a hidden product ID on their site. Also, they may offer another special soon. I believe that they had an Easter special either last year or during the previous year.

So what your are saying is that the average JetBrains developer can't buy lunch until the EAP is over? I always knew it is pretty strange to work in Russia. But hey, not paying your employees is something which doesn't work elsewhere;)

I should try it here at the office... but then I'd get slapped with some
form of breaking the us constitution or something...

Well, OK, but JetBrains aren't going to keep giving you a perpetual free license because your company already spent their budget on a competitor's product are they.
I was lucky and got a personal license for $149 (I think it was that much, I can't exactly remember) during one of the Easter promotions. It was the best money I ever spent and has easily paid itself back in productivity.
You could try mailing sales@intellij.com and asking if the personal license is still available - I think there were some other threads on here about that aready so you could also try searching the forum for your answer.
I sympathise with you to some extent because $499 would be far too much for me if I were buying a new personal license. It would be nice, for us , if they'd offer personal licenses at a discount to individuals all year around.
Yeah, IDEA is an amazing product and I'd be willing to fork out $150 for a personal license to keep using it, but doubt I would fork over $500 for something work releated...
I'll ask sales about it. Jetbrains is an awesome company and email response has always been top notch, so there is some reason to hope :).
Curtiss.
Robert,
by the frequence of your postings I assumed you get payed by German taxmoney;)

Oh well in that case, donut taxmoney is better :)

I have actually seen this happen at several clients.
The usual cause is a fairly high level program manager who is sold on
JBuilder, and who thus authorizes the expense. This allows lower level
managers to buy JBuilder, normally out of their discretionary budget,
without needing to ask for spending authority, while a different IDE
such as IDEA is more than they can afford.
I just got a client to start experimenting with Eclipse, as it is a fair
jump up over the version of JBuilder they were using. I suspect that
once they get a good taste of solid refactoring, IDEA demos might work
better.
For what it is worth, I bought my copy of IDEA with my own money, as I
was getting tired of a few Eclipse foibles.

I think I messed up things.
I always thought you were from Hamburg, Germany. Never mind ...
Jens
PS: The only IT people in Germany I know with plenty of free time are paid by tax money ...;)
I pay for IDEA out-of-pocket too. That way, I get to keep it when/if I move on.

He he! But this only works for some time. Seems like they are out of business now.

Come on - IDEA's not that bad. After EAP is over and we start selling,
developer can buy a yearful of lunches (and a little bit more)!
Hey Robert - how about a yearful of donuts?
:)))))

Presumably, he gets more than that 1% back in pay raises if his managers

No please, no donuts for Robert... we don't know exactly where he puts

Same here, $150 is an awful lot easier to swallow .. I work for myself and every expense hits me personally.
I'll have to keep an eye out for this infamous 'personal' license - but knowing my luck I'll blink and miss it.
