Next EAP cycle - name suggestions ?

IDEA v4.0 seems to be closing on us so I was thinking about the name for the next EAP cycle. How about "Avalon" ? It also starts with "A", although not taken from the Greek methology but a name of the island somewhere. Seems cute to me ..

That's great Robert, thanks,

To closely match the original Miranda, shouldn't it be rather something
along :
1/ You have the right to NOT refactor
2/ Any code you don't refactor can be ... against you

I like your version of rule 3 and 4 very much.

haha... for #2 it's anything you say can be used against you in the
court of law... so perhaps it should be:

Any code you refactor can be used against you in the peer reviews

making the whole thing:

1/ You have the right to NOT refactor
2/ Any code you refactor can be used against you in the peer reviews
3/ You have the right to have IDEA present now and during any future
refactorings
4/ If you cannot afford and IDEA license, one will be appointed to you,

or how about something more modern:

Atreides

You mean "Arthritis", don't you?
;)

My 2 cents on the subject: "Avatar" sounds good (and has strong meaning
too):

<Merriam-Webster>
Etymology: Sanskrit avatAra descent, from avatarati he descends, from ava-
away + tarati he crosses over -- more at UKASE, THROUGH
Date: 1784
1 : the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu)
2 a : an incarnation in human form b : an embodiment (as of a concept or
philosophy) often in a person
3 : a variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity
</Merriam-Webster>

Don't forget that Avatar is used in most forums as the icon representing the
subscriber, although I don't know why :)

What about "Olesya" or "Katja" or "Laika" (first -female- dog in space;
see

http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/space_level2/laika.html)?

Girl names suck, as well as dog names. Also, "Laika" is a 60-ies cigarette
brand, as well as common name for any Russian establishment in Hollywood B
and C movies. Yikes.

I may seem a pervert, but the first thing I think when seeing this name is
condom brand. Nah.

As in eating, or burning donuts with your car, where you go skidding the
tires because you're driving so fast, but that would be the plural
version of it... burning donuts.

Did you mean doughnuts or Do nuts as in Go nuts? :)

Especially at the end of the EAP, where we would all be waiting for the
Banana release.

I like it too. But all I think is Banana Republic. Orange reminds me Agent
Orange as well as Clockwork Orange. Apple? Hmm... ;) Maybe Cherry? Datsun
Cherry, but who remember it now?

-10. No girl names, espesially Russian. It is painful enough to deal with

What about "Alcyone"? She is one of the Seven Sisters (Pleiades) from Greek Mythology, and happens to be the brightest star in the constellation.

With the hundreds of languages, and thousands of idioms spoken on the
planet, there is a non-null probability that
"Happy New Year"
is an insult, or the name of a illegal sexual practice, involving a
living animal and kitchen utensils, in one of them. It won't keep me
from celebrating.

We are not trying to name a new car, to be sold on many continents.
So, if the EAP name is an insult in one language, or an inappropriate
reference to a local product, that's ok.

"Happy New Year"
(choose the language you want, to decode the hidden message)

- Googolplex,

It sounds deadly, and cruel.

I counter suggest :
"Hunter hunter"

- Hard to pronounce (nobody will steal this name)
- not quite common either
- strong
, and it even comes with a soundtrack, by French singer Chantal Goya:

"Ce matin, un lapin, a tué un chasseur"
"C'était un lapin qui, c'était un lapin qui"
"C'était un lapin qui avait un avait un fusil".

I'm sure Google translation will be LOL.

I think Avatar is used to represent the subscriber probably because it has
meanings like "incarnation", "embodiment". So your Avatar is your
encarnation.

In Portuguese, Alcyone is often used as a person name, more commonly in the
form "Alcione". More commonly a female name, but sometimes also used for
males (so sometimes it's hard to guess if you are looking for Mr. or Ms.
Alcione :))) However, I didn't know its origin. Thanks.

Argonautica
- Starts with A ( inline with Aurora, Ariadna etc)
- ( From the name of ship in movie "Deep Rising" )
- Naut-ica -- related to sea
- If coding is like an adventure in the vast sea of Java Argonautica is like a ship which helps you in sailing through it safely

Other suggestions
Hurricane
Magellan
Elixir
Hercules
Zodiac

Perihelion
- (as a rival to name "Eclipse")
- When Earth is nearest to Sun in Elliptical Orbit

How about "Aria"?

Don't know of any Greek mythology ties, but is short and represents to me the harmony that I see in IDEA.

how about "Kreya"
it means creation in sanskrit( an ancient indian language which is still in use)
this word is the origin for all words which relates to the word creation

Also something like a follow up for Java Tiger (1.5) isn't it?

I think that Tiger Hunter isn't that bad at all. After all it only is a project name isn't it?

Robert,

It has to be negative to not refactor so I would rather have Alain's version of #2 "any code you do not refactor can..." or a positive version of it "any code you leave un(re)factored can be used..."

Wait isn't it, "anything you say can be held against you in the court of
law?" Therefore it should be a positive, since you did say something,
hence you did refactor?

:) I can't believe we're still on the IntelliJ IDEA Myranda rights LOL

How about "Sphinx"

The great Sphinx in Egypt is infront of the pyramids, guarding them, it
represents the body of a Lion (for strength and power) and a head of a
man -most prbably King Khafraa- (for intelligence)

And oh, it's usually written with an "H" when referring to the mythic sister: Halcyone. So I think this rules out the name :)

0

We can always bypass the mythology reference and just go with "Afriggingreatide". :)

Eric

0

You confused me there by reusing (or abbreviating) the g. I was like
'what the hell is a "reatide"?' ;)

Maybe you should use camel-case ;)

Antigone

Not a mythological goddess, but the daughter of Oedipus who buried her dead brother against the wishes of Creon, the king of Thebes, and was sealed in a cave (along with Creon's son who loved her and refused to leave her) to die.

In the plays of the same name (Sophocles' and Jean Anouilh's), Antigone is headstrong and a symbol of pure moral certitude who refuses to be swayed by the reasoned arguments of Creon and the other characters to avoid her own death.

IDEA and the folks at IntelliJ seem pretty good at keeping to the path of doing the right thing, both in the ide itself and in their relation to all us well-reasoned cave-bound hackers looking for the easy way out. IDEA helps prod us along the path of Java Moral Certitude (JSR forthcoming?).
