How to view Maven-downloaded javadocs in external browser?

Hello,
I've Maven project with couple of dependencies. When I click "Download artifacts" button, javadocs are downloaded.
When I want to open it in external browser (Shift+F1), an error like this is thrown:

Cannot show "jar://C:/Users/esemba/.m2/repository/com/opensymphony/xwork/2.1.1/xwork-2.1.1-javadoc.jar!/com/opensymphony/xwork2/ActionSupport.html" in external browser.

Ctrl+Q functionality works fine. Is here any way to view jar javadocs in external browser?

Thank you.

Hello Lukas,

To the best of my knowledge, there currently is not a way to view javadocs from an archive in an external browser. It is a feature that I have always thought would be useful. So I just opened a JIRA feature request for such at: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-21454 Please consider voting for it.

As a potential workaround you can copy the URL from the error message. Then add "file:" after the "jar:" so the URL becomes "jar:file://< full path to filename.jar>!/dir/file.html". You can then paste that in Firefox and it will open it. (I'm not sure if any other browsers support the jar:file: protocol) It's obviously not the most ideal solution, but it's something. With a good clipboard manager with macro capability, you can make the process a bit easier.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for your response Mark, i will use your walkaround until the bug in Idea is resolved. JIRA thread you've started is for some reason marked as resolved, so I can't vote for it.

It was marked as a duplicate of http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEABKL-4768 and therefore closed. I had searched to see if someone had already opened such a request, but for what ever reason did not see this one. So you can vote for the it (IDEABKL-4768) instead.
