Forum questions

Hi,

* In the previous forum, you could see which messages are new, and which were already seen. I don't understand how I can see the same with the new forum. I see no difference between threads which I've already seen, and which I didn't.
* Also, I'm using Opera (On Mac OS). I cannot post messages anymore, since this Rich Editor doesn't load.
* Last question: what's the difference between 'All content' and 'Discussions' ??

I like the new layout, but the Opera issue and the first issue prevent me from using the forum.

Greetings, Erik

The lack of already-visited status was the first thing complained about. We were told that an upcoming upgrade will reinstate that functionality.

In the meantime, I think a minor CSS change to increase the now quite subtle distinction between visited and unvisited links would be a nice aid to at-a-glance determination of which links have been updated since the previous visit.

I have many other complaints, but if the past is any indication, we're stuck with this forum software and it's apparently no use to request real improvements, since for one thing it is 3rd-party software.

This editor, for one thing, is an abomination...

Hi Erik,

* You can see the read/unread messages in the 'Discussions' view. Unread items are blod and read -- normal. There is also an option to 'Mark all as Read'
* Unfortunately Opera is not supported by Jive and they say it is not planed.
* The new engine not only contains Discussions, but also Documents and Blogs. Righ now 99% of the content here is Discussions, and there are some Documents in FAQ sections. So, 'All Content' shows recent activity with all kinds of content, and Discussions — only discussions activity. We are working on more content and on a better presentation to make it more obvious, Thanks for your questions and ideas.

Hi Randall,

Actually, now you can see read/unread items in 'Discussions' view. Example:  http://www.jetbrains.net/devnet/community/idea/ideacommunity?view=discussions
You can mark items as read and you can also make this view default for a community.

As to other complaints — please send them over. I do not promise we will do everything you ask, but we want to make community more comfortable. Yes, there are some limitations of the software but still we can do some customization and some functionality tweaks. Plus we actively communicate with the software vendor and they help us where possible.

I got your note about the editor

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for your answers. I wanted to put a screenshot here, of how my screen looks, but the 'insert image' button is greyed out in Safari (I can upload a video, however....), but for me, there is (almost) no distinction between a visited link, and a non-visited link. The difference between a bold and non-bold link is almost not visible on my screen.

The fact that Opera is not supported is really a shame, but this will save me a lot of time posting on this forum. It's also one of the first websites I encountered not suitable for Opera btw. I really feel bad that for a stupid reason like a browser compatiblility issue (I only need a textarea, not a fancy rich text editor!), I'll loose the contact with my favorite IDE. I'm not going to switch to Firefox or Safari just because I can't post on this forum.

Opera has a newsreader built in, doesn't it? You could do worse than
point it at news.intellij.net.

One thing that I really liked with the previous incarnation was being able to see what was new for all things related to IDEA (i.e. not just Community, or EAP). The Recent Content content view doesn't show this, and I can't see any way to see a discussions view for everything there. Is there some way to do this?

Also, being able to disable the rich text editor would be excellent.

Cheers,
Colin

using icons everywhere without any tooltips is _really_ annoying

Hi Eugene,

Search feature is far less relevant, which is really annonying on a forum.

I think there's some bugs :

Search for showsettingsutil on all communities and without date restrictions. You won't find anything. Search for ShowSettingsUtil, you'll find 15 results
But search is not case sensitive, e.g. configurable and Configurable give same results

Hmm....when I paste that URL in Opera, I'm redirected to www.jetbrains.com, and the feedreader from Opera doesn't pick up anything (not even when adding it manually). Besides: would that allow me to post? (It's not reading I have problem with, it's posting) It's not NNTP right? (which I can't use due to some firewall constraints...)

Thanks for the help btw!

It's NNTP. I don't know how you'd configure Opera for that - maybe
nntp://news.intellij.net/? But it's academic anyway if your firewall
would prevent it.

Hi Colin,

Seems like the Default view is not exactly what you need, but it happens with the defaults sometimes,

I advice you to create your personalized view. Go to http://www.jetbrains.net/devnet/index.jspa?showpersonalized=true and personalize your homepage.
I'm sure it should be simple. Once you are done with it, choose this view as default and you'll get it opened every time you get to http://www,jetbrains.net/devnet

Hope it helps,

-Eugene

Hi Sylvian!

Thanks for the investigation about the search.
I agree, there's some problem when searching for words with camel notation.
I'll see if it can be configured and will report to Jive to see what they say.

-Eugene
