Assuage My Apprehensions?

Hi,

Being the paranoid cautious person I am, I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about the switch to IDEA 8. Having purchased the license upgrade, I am committed to the switch-over, just uneasy about potential pitfalls.

Are there issues I should be aware of? Beyond backing up my .ipr, .iws and .iml files, is there anything else I can do to maximize the likelihood of a smooth transition?

Is it true you can freely switch back and forth between opening a given project in IDEA 7 and IDEA 8?

Thanks.

As far as I have seen switching between IDEA 7 and 8 works great (on plain Java projects).
One tip: I would recommend to not transfer the third party plugins you are using from 7 to 8. There are a lot of incompatible plugins that prevent IDEA from working correctly.

couldn't JB fix this by patching the plugin.xml of plugins known to be causing trouble on plugins.intellij.net? seems so easy to me

Changing the plugin.xml of plugins in the repository will not stop the plugins already on your disk from causing trouble. So I do not know how useful that will be.

true, but 8.0 has been in the make for a few months ;)

IMHO it should disable all pre-8 plugins by default on installation, I doubt there's many working 7.x-plugins users might want to enable afterwards

Maybe not many, but one of my own plugins has not changed since I wrote it for 5.0 (or maybe 4.5), and it still works:

Still, your suggestion would probably prevent many problems.
