File tab placement algorithm

OK, I give. Does anyone know the algorithm for for the arrangment of the tabs when multiple files are open.

This doesn't have to do with Tab Groups (my question existed before Tab Groups were present).

The algorithm doesn't look purely alphabetical based on the filename, nor does it appear to be based purely on the path+file. But I can't seem to figure out where the tab is going to show up when I open a new file.

Just curious. And thanks...

It appears right after the currently opened file.
Say you have three files open : A, B, and C.
Currently, you're looking at B.
Then you open file X.
It will be open between just after B.
You will have in that order : A, B, X, C
(X being the new "currently edited" file).

And for the fun, what happens when you close file X ?
You get back to the previous layout : A, B, and C, with B being selected.
