What does 'pinning' the editor window buy me?
I understand the 'pin' feature of the project, structure, ant, etc windows. But what does the new pin feature of the editor window do? After I 'pin' the editor tab I cannot see any different behavior in the editor framework.

Editor has its limits of currently open files. When you pin the file, this
file won't be closed - but others will.
Try more amazing feature (from context menu on the tab select 'new
horizontal tab group' or 'new vertical tab group'!
Oh my! Editing more than one file at a time. A first for IDEA!

That soo rocks. Only, would be good if it was also in the context menu of
the edit window. And it seems you can only split once.
What would rock even more is if you could split the split. Say a
horizontal split, and then a virtical split in the lower split.
Mmmmmm....

Would it be better to have eclipse like way of clossing the tab and may be additional icon for the pinning as well?
Yes, it would be very convenient to close a window by just clicking somewhere in the tab. (like Eclipse)
For now you can use the middle mouse button to close a tab

Eclipse is sooo clunky. I like using the middle mouse button much better. Less aiming. In WSAD at least, the icons don't show up until you hover over the tab (to reduce clutter, I suspect). That means you first have to hover over the tab, and then find the button to click on. In Idea, I just stab the tab with my middle mouse button.
Or shift-click, for those of us middle-mouse-button-impaired. Very handy. While I'm here, adding "Close all but pinned" (obvious semantics) to the right-click menu when clicking on an editor tab would be quite useful indeed.
+1
The middle-mouse button (scroll-wheel) click is very and handy and quick. Much better than the "close" icon.
I haven't even looked at this functionality yet, but I hope (and assume) that there will also be a key-binding (or at least the possibility to add a key-binding) that performs this functionality as well.
cheers

If that's the case, it will be very hard for the feature that is about
to be implemented (I hope): drag a tab from one tab-group to another.

It's hard a bit (especially to provide convenient visual feedback), but
we will implement this feature (not sure about Aurora release).

Vladimir,
What about drag'n drop editor tab reordering (inside a tab group) ?
That's more than a year since those feature requests have been submitted.

Who said that we will not implement them? :) We will implement them as
soon as we have a time. These features are not vital, it's something
like smooth scroll. DnD of tabs, for example, is now high priority
because IDEA has tab groups. So we will just rearrange our plans for
next version.
