Installer and settings

One of the installer screens looks like this:

You can import your settings from the previous version
of IntelliJ IDEA

( ) I do not have a previous version of IntelliJ IDEA
or I do not want to import my settings

( ) I want to import my settings

Select location of previous version of IntelliJ IDEA

What settings is this screen talking about? The settings that I
previously told IDEA that I want to store in my home directory? Or are
there other settings in the IDEA directory?

If it's the files in my home directory, why is the installer asking me
for the IDEA directory? Is it just an easy way for the installer to find
out where my settings are stored?

I bring it up because the latest installer (922) cannot find my settings
when I tell it to look in 915's directory. (It says "Unable to detect
location of 'config' directory from
/Applications/IntelliJ-IDEA-915/bin".)

However, it can find my settings when I tell it to look in 896's
directory. I chose that but I hope it's not using 896's settings,
because I've changed things since using 915.

IDEA settings can be located either in your home directory or on the IDEA
directory or any other directory specified. You choose where to keep such
settings in the installer. Even if you don't choose to import settings from
the previous IDEA installation but specify it to keep the settings in the
same location (e.g. your home directory which is the default choice) they in
fact will be "imported".
I don't know why it could not detect location of the settings for your
installation of #915. Maybe something was wrong with the installation.
