latest eclipse (m3) Follow
I have been playing with eclipse lately (for the aspectj support) so I
track the new releases. M3 just came out, and nearly every new feature
already exists in idea. For the last few builds this has been the case.
While it can't be said for certain that idea is driving the feature set
of eclipse, it sure looks that way. (Jetbrains, you ought to have a big
smile right now!)

and maybe consider applying for patents on certain innovative ideas. then eclipse (aka ibm) would pay royalties.
This is certainly good idea.
Quickfixes from eclipse are just intention actions in Idea.
Also several other features...

That they need to reinvent the wheel themself. But the ideas come from
IDEA (maybe that's why it's called so) :)

Though to be honest, I don't find Eclipse to be faster than IDEA ....
They have very much resources. Somewhere I read something about 60
developers on Sizilia...

I should have clarified, my comment was based on Eclipse while using the

ummmm I have... no thanks. Idea lacks a little in jsp support, but
Lomboz redefines lacking. I don't know who writes the code on it. I've
asked to help and never got a response, I've submitted bugs which never
got fixed, and releases on that thing happen like once a year or something.
This is the problem with Plugins... you have to reply on a developer who
might get busy and not have time to update it. I accuse myself of such
behavior with my own plugin... so while I'm not surprised that it's
support is low, I was at least hoping that either a) the quality would
be better, or b) that eclipse would have one to begin with!

I would say IDEA defines the "state of the art" in realm of code analysis - therefore it is only normal that others would follow.
The one point in which Eclipse is clearly ahead is full incremental compilation, where any errors caused by a code change are immediately detected, even if they happen in dependent files/classes. Of course, in contrast to on-line code analysis, this only happens when the file is saved.
Other than that I find the code completion and cross referencing features in eclipse to be a rather weak imitation of IDEA. After changing to and fro between the two IDEs, I am always amazed at the speed and accuracy in which IDEAS parsing and completion works. Nothing I know comes close.
(P.S.: IDEA, please dont take this as saying that I am content with the speed. That will not happen ;)).

.. as opposed to the IntelliJ, who might not have the time and resources to develop it at all ....?
I imagine that a lot of plug-ins fall by the way side, but just as many are well supported and well maintained. And if a plug-in is really bad, then someone often steps in and builds a better one.

Yes, the incremental compilation is a nice feature (I thing CodeGuide does something similar), but I also find it slows Eclipse down a lot.
