If only... (Ruby-related)

How great a place would the world be if there were an Intellij Idea for Ruby?

I can understand why you wouldn't find it lighthearted since you interpreted it in such an unnecessarily melodramatic context.

Can't wait to read. Ho ho ho (evil laugh)

The hyperbole is mounting.

The original post said, approximately, "How great would it be if there was an Intellij Idea for Ruby."

Not "You guys should build Ruby in the existing Idea."

Not "Idea should be an open IDE framework, like Eclipse."

Not "Idea should handle every language, and do everything."

Not "Idea should be encumbered with every feature I can think of until it bursts like a rotten fruit."

Not "I want Idea to DIE! I hate it, and I hate all of you, and I work for the forces of EVIL! And MAVEN!"

Not "Idea = Fascism."

Was the comment a little frivilous? I guess. Will it ultimately lead to the downfall of Idea, purportedly the greatest feat ever accomplished by man or god, hallowed be thy name? Um...probably not. Should the poster be tarred, feathered, and run out of town? Seems a little harsh to me.

Has the response to this topic been orders of magnitude more silly than the first post? Oh yeah.
You're right, that was fun.

Patently untrue - the real programmers work only with FORTRAN and if it is
not enough they switch to assembler. All these run-rime linked OO languages
are for suckers only. No respected programmers would use something other
than ED for development and of course no stupid IDEs.

The real programmers only work with JAVA. Please never support any other
language. If you use another language then don't buy IDEA, go with ECLIPSE
that at least have
syntaxis highlight and some compiler options (no refactorings, no

intellijs

searchs)

That's a valid point. On the other hand, I continue to be surprised by

how uncivil and melodramatic people can be in this setting. Yeah, watching
flame wars is fun and all, but on the other hand, this list is also where
valuable information and feedback is supposed to come from. It's like
trying to watching a documentary and a soap opera at the same time. Oh
well, I guess that's why picture-in-picture was invented :)

I like a good soap. Some of the best even try to be documentary-like (ER).
Intrigues, lies, deception, heroes: the mix of good old ingridients. Plus
cool buzzwords, hi-tech equipment and caring hands. They give the incider
feeling, the sense of being a part of something.

(taking deep breath) Free IDEA! No to sharks of imperialism! Yes to the best
Java IDE! El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido!

What is Ruby, anyway? ;)

I'm not sure how else to interpret:

"How great would it be if there was an Intellij Idea for Ruby."

Except to interpret it as:

"You guys should build Ruby in the existing Idea."

I agree. That should be a plugin or at least something I can turn off. The
less clutter the better.

What does 'Find Join Point Identified by PointCut' do?

Ask yourself; if you don't know what it means, then does it belong on the

context menu of a Java IDE...? ... :)

It's something to do with AspectJ; no doubt someone here knows exactly

what it does.

The literal interpretation would be "I wish there was a tool like Intellij for Ruby." One would presume the "If Only..." in the title denotes the philosophical nature of the thought.

And even if you interpretation were correct, wouldn't a response like "Mmm, no that's not a good idea, because..." be more adult than "I didn't find your post particularly lighthearted (there's nothing funny about destroying our favorite IDE)...If you can't handle people disagreeing with you then you shouldn't post."

A reasonable interpretation of your and others' responses to this and other topics would be "You are a thoughtless, selfish, retarded pig-buggerer who has just wasted everyone's time, poisoned the entire EAP process, ensured the demise of our beloved IDE, and probably initiated the gradual decline and implosion of our corrupt, decadent society. Thanks a lot for the next dark age, devil."

To be fair, I'm quoting mostly Hani's posts, but I think yours was somewhat in the same vein. ;)

One would presume the "If Only..." in the title denotes the philosophical nature of the thought.

While in the midst of an early-access forum for Idea? What could possibly be the point of this sort of "philosophical" musing aside from (hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink) trying to get people clamoring for Ruby support and thus waste even more of IntelliJ's time.

wouldn't a response like "Mmm, no that's not a good idea, because..." be more adult than "I didn't find your ..."?

No, because if I said that instead I would have answered the wrong post (the topic as opposed to the grousing reply that this has become a "flame war")

Yes, that sums it up nicely. :)

Oh good. As long as we're all on the same page...:)

Hani, I was hoping that the request was a joke too... alas it doesn't seem
like it, I think Steve was serious when he asked.

On a SERIOUS request thou - user definable syntax highlighting would be
handy, even if theres no "pragmatic" support, highlighting would be handy.

Esp. for when editing jython scripts, or sql statements etc.

as far as I know Jetbrains plan an IDE for C#

personally I would also prefer it if they build a IDE for
ruby instead.

this is just personal taste.

My favorite language:

This definitely needs an IDE.

+1, loved the idea :)

I know a few people out there who sure deserved this treatment. Thankfully not on this forum (cough, cough, Javalobby, cough).
