IDEA Advertisement!

Hi JetBrains guys -

Maybe I've not been reading enough, but I was excited to see an
advertisement on Page 9 of this month's JDJ --- it's the first I'd seen.
Way to go!

Yes I saw that. I bet the guy in the ad's name is Eugene, the question is which one ;)

It couldn't be. They both know the right tool already.

I do not think that bragging like "Intellij IDEA is simply the best Java
development environment available" is allowed in the advertisements. It is
rather simple to prove that IDEA is not "the best". IDEA is good, it is
better than others in some areas, and worse in others (take GUI for
starters. No GUI editor, hence not the best. oops!) IDEA is not a silver
bullet. And because "goodness" of a software product cannot be measured in
metres or kilograms, one can get get in a serious lawsuit with statements
like this.

If I recall correctly, there was a lawsuit against some rasor manufacturer,
who claimed in its ad that its razor shaves better than all others. This was
verified and turned out that it was good, but could not be called hands down
the best. They lost the case and payed big bucks. And this happened in the
business where you can set at least some kind of formal testing for "best"
product.

Never, never use phrases like "our product is the best". Good, yes.
Competitive, yes. With features no other products have, yes. Unparalleled
refactoring support, great. But never "the best".

Another thing: both IntelliJ and JetBrains names are used in one small ad.
This is no good. Only one should be chosen. You do not need to use both
because you do not need to explain you name change for those geeks who was
using your product for a long time. And those who just saw the ad in the
newspaper, do not know your old name. This should be fixed. Or at least some
correlation should be made between those two names.

Overall, the ad feels very cheap and not well-thought. Nice idea for a
picture, but still feels cheap. IDEA deservs better ads.

Just FYI. I just looked at the last issue of Software Development. Some quotes from the ads there:

"Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and the new Visual Studio .NET provide you with the most productive application platform for building, deploying, and managing connected applications."

"That's why we developed Visual SlickEdit - the most comprehensive and flexible code editor you can use."

"The best way to run Java apps is on the application server from the inventors of Java." (Sun ONE Application Server 7 ad)

And isn't Nissan "Simply the Best" on it's TV ads?

By the way, in English, "best" not only means that it's better than
competitors, but also "most suitable". Exactly, this word game is used in
the header.

E.g. "a hammer is not the best tool to code". It does not mean that there
are different hammers for coding, it means it ridiculous to use one for
that.

IMHO

#2 is really good
#1 and #4 seem scary, like a scene from a horror movie
#3 I don't really understand
#5 and #6 seem to be targeted at borland since they used similar photos on jbuilder.

All they can be sued. Because these statements are rather misguiding or
simply false. As a consumer I may sue them and win. Not that I am going to,
but someone could do it easily.

Regardless of the legal side, this is the most primitive argument, why
somebody should try/buy IDEA -- at least for me. It looks like a
little bit helpless to find a better phrase.

I agree. It's high on BS and low on informational content. Many people will think: "I'll decide if it's the best myself, thank you very much". They will be offended that you want to make that decision for them.

Just for the record, for advertisement purposes, "best" means "as good as".
The only time you get into potential legal hot water is if you claim yours
is "better" without clear and independent justification and proof. But you
can throw around the word "best" all you want without much fear.
