make working with branches easier with idea

Hi,

it would be nice that IDEA recognizes branches of the same projects, so I can switch active branch of a project back and forth, view diffs and apply patches easily. It would be thing that regular developer need daily, not those memory eaters(endless wizards) added in each version.

It would be also a step toward supporting distributed VCS like mercurial. Don't now why we need archaic vcs support (ClearCase) in Selena. Does anybody use it?

Oops, I've just realized that my suggestion could be misunderstood. Under branch support I mean that idea could use directory structure like this one
project
+trunk
+branch-X
+branch-Y

Hello Nick,

You would be surprised how many people use ClearCase, mostly because the
tool is standardized in their (usually very large) organization.

Hi,

Well, ok. I'm very tolerant about features I can switch off :). But what about native support for branches and DVCSes (most specifically mercurial). Can we see this in foreseeing future (I mean when)?

Don't know about clearcase but hopefully it does branches too... (it's a vcs after all). Would people in big organizations say you "Thank you so much!" and pay you big money for such a feature? I hope so :)

That's true. Why isn't there a decent plugin for version 6 then(the one for 5 crashes all the time), to support ClearCase?
I'm almost forced into using Eclipse. When I want to use some of the Idea's features, I use Eclipse to check out and then Idea for editing, then again Eclipse to check in, how sick is that.
I also tried to use regular Unix commands for checking out, but even then Idea does not see a file as being checked out. This has been very frustrating. I love IDEA, but it is a lost case, unless it starts coming with a very good version of ClearCase plugin. Or better yet - use plugins written for Eclipse, that would make all the difference in the world!!!!!

A ClearCase plugin is already included in the Selena builds. While right
now it's not yet very good, there's still a lot of time left before release,
and you can help make the plugin better by sending feedback.

You can try the Selena EAP builds at:
