how many java processes should be open?

When I run php storm and htop (a process viewer)  there are a ton of processes that seam to be from phpstorm.

I'm wondering if the amount of them being open is hinting that something is wrong in my setup.

scrolling is slow and typing is like waking in mud today.

The process reads:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/bin/java -agentlib:yjpagent-linux64=disablealloc,delay=10000,sessionname=WebIde90 -Xbootcl

When I'm developing I want firefox to work fast and Phpstorm to work fast.  Any hints at getting phpstorm running faster would be appreciated.

OS is: kubuntu 14.04 LTS

$ uname -a
Linux ussher 3.13.0-55-lowlatency #94-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 18 00:44:19 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So it doesnt look like it should then?

One thing I notice is that if the first program that I open directly after startup is PhpStorm it performs much better than if I open other programs first then start PhpStorm.
