Specify project on startup

Dear group,

as I am currently working on a very large project but from time to time
which to just launch IntelliJ to try a few things, I would like it to
have the option of not loading the latest project on startup (which
takes some minutes to initialize) but have a projectless IDE be
launched. Is this currently possible?

TIA,
Karsten Tinnefeld

In Options/IDE Settings/General uncheck the first checkbox "Reopen last
project on startup"

Hmm, this is fine when I know that tomorrow I want to try a few things,
but it does not help when Idea is not currently running.

What I am looking for is "change
~/.IntellijIdea/config/options/ide.general.xml" so that it contains
]]>, then start Idea,
without actually modifying the file.

There's another option that might work for what you want.

You can specify a project file on the command line when you start IDEA.
For windows, this works for either the idea.exe and idea.bat launchers.
For *nix, I think it works for the script as well, but I didn't test that
just now.

Anyway, you can set IDEA to start up with no project loaded by default.
And then create a few shortcuts/links to launchers, one to the default with
no project loaded, and a few to specific projects loaded.

This does require that you set a few things up in advance, so maybe that
won't work for what you want.

Paul
