The performance problem

Hi,

I like Intellij very much. In the office, I am the only one using it. The rest are using JBuilder.

We have our own application server, which starts very slowly because of the initlization and caching. The project is about 700 java files. There is a system.out to show us the server finishing its startup.

The system is windows2000 server, PIII 933 with 256M, my machine, using Sun JDK 1.3.1_05

If I run our application server on command line using the class files compiled by ant, it took about 65 sec to finish the loading the server(When I saw the system print out)

In JBuilder8 Enterprise Trial, it took about 110 sec to start the server running in debug mode, using the class files compiled by JBuilder itself.

In Intellij Idea 3.0.1, it took about 270 sec to start the server running in debug mode (Local VCS disable), using the class files compiled by IDEA. I believe they are all compiled by Sun JDK, but just for a fair test.

I don't know the reason. But you can see the difference. The only thing I dislike IDEA is the performance. It needs more memory than JBuilder, it runs more slowly than JBuilder(startup, debug or even run another standalone java application)

The above tests are running in almost same project configuration between jbuilder8 and idea 3.0.1
There are a lot of good things about idea, I just hope guys in JetBrain can pay more attention in the proformance area.

Thanks

How long will it take for the server to start if the files are compiled with javac ("-g" key specified) and started in debug mode?
Also please check if "Force classic VM" option (File |Project Properties | Debugger) is turned on.
