Problems with typing in IDEA editor

When I switch between tabs (no matter how: using mouse or a key sequence) the following problem occurs:
I can only move the cursor or even delete text, however, I can't type in anything - the text does not appear on the screen. But after I switch back and forth to another program (change focus), the typed text is inserted into the current cursor position.
The search didn't yield any solutions or explanations for this problem.
Any IDEAs? %)

You are not the only one having this issue. I have had this problem since at least IDEA 4.0 when running under Linux. After any sort of "find", I need to minimize/restore the IDEA window to get the cursor back. It is quite annoying.

I don't know if this is an issue with IDEA, Linux, KDE, or the JDK.

I'm having a similar, maybe related, problem: Sometimes (10-20 times a day), the editor simply would not accept any input anymore (it wouldn't show a cursor neither). Back when I was using GNOME that wasn't too much of a problem, I could just shade-unshade or minimize-unminimize the window and things were OK again. Since I'm using KDE, this doesn't work anymore. In some cases, the IDEA window even refused to take focus at all. There are only two ways to get IDEA back to a usable state: Restart it or open a project in a new frame so I can close the old one and then reopen the project I was working on in the new frame. In the new frame, the editor will work again.

Annoying, especially with big projects that take some time to load ... :(

Has anyone from the IDEA development team ever been able to duplicate this problem?

I, too, experience this consistently, but also with the "cross tab" typing problems described in another post. Quite often, when I'm in this state, if I type and what I type doesn't show in the current tab, if I switch tabs, what I typed in the first tab gets entered in the second.

Doing any sort of find and then switching tabs CONSISTENTLY puts me in this state. If I have only one tab open, this problem doesn't seem to occur. If, when in this state, I minimize and then restore IDEA, the typed characters immediately get entered into the current tab and all seems well, until I search and switch tabs again.

Another, potentially related issue I have is with the Search and Replace dialog. In that dialog, I can NEVER type in the replace entry field without first moving the focus into it, clicking with the mouse back in the search entry field and then putting the focus back into the replace entry field.

Environment:
- Linux (Novell NLD using a 2.6.5-7.191 kernel)
- IntelliJ IDEA 5.0.2 (Build #3542)
- 2 GB memory with 256/512 MB assigned to IDEA via the idea.vmoptions file
- IDEA_JDK environment variable points to a 1.5.0_04 JDK. My project uses a 1.4.2_07 JDK.

I'm at a state with this where it's becoming almost UNBEARABLE to use. Any help, ideas, suggestions, ... would be GREATLY appreaciated.

Read here: http://jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-2359 .

Running IDEA under JDK 1.5.0_05 or 1.5.0_06 should fix this issue. If not,
try IDEA 5.1 available at http://intellij.net/eap/products/idea/download.jsp
.

Thanks! Upgrading to JDK 1.5.0_06 fixed almost everything, at least my IDEA 5.0.2 in now usable !!!

One remaining problem I have, although minor compared to what I was previously experiencing, is that after performing a search, quite often the focus ends up somewhere other than the IDEA editor. I have to alt-tab back to IDEA to resume working. This doesn't happen with every search and I don't pattern as to why it happens some times but not others.

I am still seeing this problem. Selecting a text, Ctlr-S(find function), results in active editor loosing focus.

This seems to happen most often when openning a file for the first time during my editing session.

subsequent search attempt doesn't result in loosing focus.

Running IDEA 5.1 on JDK 1.5.0_06 on Linux Debian, Gnome desktop, kernel 2.6.8. project runs on JDK 1.4.2_06. I have dual monitors. One is my laptop and its monitor port connected to a 19' viewsonic. this runs in a expanded desktop mode.
