I'd also like to know what kind of coverage of plugin development is included.

This is from the about section:

At the time of the first writing, IDEA 5 was still in development. Although we have worked closely with JetBrains to ensure accuracy, some of the 5 features may have changed slightly before the final release. We added IDEA 5 callouts throughout the text to highlight the differences between versions 4.5 and 5.

You can read the full about here: http://www.manning.com/books/fields3/about

The authors should consider something like SourceBeat (http://www.sourcebeat.com/).
This site has 'live' books to which you subscribe. As the technology changes
the authors update the text accordingly and the book (in theory) never gets
(too) out of date. As a subscriber you are paying the authors for their work
and you get access to the book as it changes and updates. The books are also
available in print through the lulu.com site for those who want to keep their
shelves from collecting too much dust. :)

Plug-in development isn't covered in this version of the book. Even without it, we ran upwards of 550 pages once you include the front matter, TOC, index, et al.

The TOC can be found at

"Plug-in development isn't covered in this version of the book."

Does this mean that there are plans for a separate book that covers plugin development?

No plans for a separate book that I'm aware of. Nothing's been said about future versions of this book - I'm sure that conversation'll be influenced by sales - but it's definitely a topic that we could include.

Good fodder for an article or a value-add, too.

When will Amazon carry the book?

Short answer: a few weeks from March 10th.

Longer answer: According to my information, the printed books should go on sale on Manning's website on March 10th. That's when they're supposed to be back from the bindery and in the warehouse. They'll then be available to Amazon and other bookstores a few weeks after that.

Manning's distributor is responsible for shipping the books from the warehouse to stores like Amazon, Borders, etc. but, obviously, there's no precise prediction on how quickly the receivers will distribute, shelve and offer them.

There are quite a few plugins with source code. Maybe Intellij could highlight them?
