Terrible Problems - Seeking Advice

My cell-mate is having trouble with the debugger. Breakpoints change to
X-out circles, but I looked very carefully at his configuration and
couldn't find any obvious problems.

If that wasn't bad enough, whenever he tries a regular compile, the
compiler hangs. Ant compiles work though.

This is on Windows 2000, EAP build 660, JDK 1.3.1_04, 1.4.0_01 and a
freshly installed 1.4.1.

If anyone has seen this kind of problem before, or has any ideas as to
what we could try, please let us know.

Thank you,

I don't know about the hanging compile effect, but I suspect the debugging problem could be caused by missing debug info in you class-files. I've had the same problem, especially when compiling with Ant, 'cause its default settings for debug-info is set to false.

Try setting

in your javac-task. Maybe this helps.

they might be crossed-out circles because they are .jsp pages and not the compiled .java classes.
or the classes have not been visited yet at all?

Hi Donald,

Crosses on breakpoints mean that the source code and classes currently
loaded in the debuggee VM are out of sync. A breakpoint is considered
invalid (X) if there's no executable instructions at the breakpoint line.
One of the reasons may be that the compiler cannot overwrite class files
with the new ones (perhaps the files are locked by another process).
What if terminate all processes and manually delete all the classes and
compiler caches?
