intellij halt and not responding for sometime, is there a way to tune it ?

hi, good day , i running intellij 5.02 , i notice that when the ide run sometimes, then it start halt and display "not responding" on top toolbar, where i notice that it give me a garbage collector bar "180M of 200M" , after freeze around few minutes , then it go back normal again

is that a way to fine tune the ide ?

i using winxp , p4-3.0 Mhz and 512mb ram

I would strongly recommend you increase your ram to 1 gig or more. 1 gig is the bare minimum for java development these days. Anything less will result in massive pain regardless of which IDE you use. I had a boss that I had to prove this to and she bought extra ram for one person for testing and the difference in performance was astonishing.

Hello alvin,

To increase memory limit for IDEA you're to edit %INSTALLATION_HOME%\bin\idea.exe.vmoptions
file and change -Xmx192m value to a larger one. In your case though (512M
physical memory available) I'd strictly discourage setting this value too
high since this will slow down whole system causing windows swapping pages
in and out from the virtual memory swap file.
