Startup Fails: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at ntdll.dll
When I start IDEA (version 4.5.3), the application starts up, then fails during the "Loading Project" "Scanning Files..." phase. I get the following error log:

Having an quick look using google it seems other people have
the same error on different apps and different
libraries.
For example http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=683285&tstart=60
Maybe try to install all updates from microsoft?

I don't know much about Win32 development, but isn't an access violation just a case where the application (or the JVM) did something it wasn't premitted to do, or didn't handle an exception case.
I've been running the MS Update utility, so pretty much every relevant patch is applied. (Perhaps that's the problem?)

Well, there's definitely something ugly going on between the default VM that is installed with 4.5.3, and Windows various libraries, in their ever-shifting arrangements (thanks to Windows Update, I'm guessing).
In any case, I modified the idea.lax file as follows:
1) commented out the explicit VM:
2) Added the following value to the list of VM arguments :
And now it's starting up without a problem under 1.5.0_05.
Hopefully 1.5 won't screw anything up to badly.
