How to configure IDEA project

Hi All,

I am new to IDEA and wanted to configure a new project in Java(web based). Actually I wanted to debug that as well from IDEA as such I have downloaded JBoss Integration too.

Can anyone help me out on this.

Thanks in advance

Well, this is a VERY broad question, as project configuration in IJ has
tons of features.

The basic way to create a project is to go to File->New Project.

After you create the project (or during the wizard) you need to create
at least 1 module, in your case a web module.

I am guessing you want to create servlets or JSPs so you need to have a
servlet container installed. We use Jetty here, but TomCat and others
work too.

There are many variables here - your preferred directory structure,
libraries (project and global), other modules, etc. that you need to
consider.

I also suggest creating an Ant build script (we use it for our automated
builds). You can ask IJ to create it but it creates a somewhat
unnecessarily big file, so we created our own streamlined file.

I hope this gets you started.

With flexibility comes responsibility, complexity and a steaper learning
curve.

IMHO, don't dispair if you feel overwhelemed by options. For me (yes,
not for everybody, IDE war shouldn't start here) IJ is one of the cases
of an application that is well worth the study, alongside (again, my
opinion, no 'Amnon the stupid' messages necessary) for example Adobe
Photoshop.

Good luck,
Amnon

It would be nice if the paper:

"Web Application Development with IntelliJ IDEA 3.0"

at http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/documentation/documentation.html

would be updated for 4.5 and 5.0.

Thanks a lot for your immediate response. The problem that I am facing is that I have an existing project, whcih comprises of JSP,EJBs,Hibernate and the normal Java files. Now I want to build it and then deploy in in JBoss.

I tried that thing long back. At that time I created just a Java project and was able to build and deploy both, but the problem was that the Java files were not really associated with the project. I used to see the red circle which means that the files were not there in the project.

Can anyone help me on this.

Thanks

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Our application is pretty different - Jetty back end, Browser UI front
end, no JSPs or EJBs (i.e. a simpler architecture).

Good luck (hey, JetBrains, when is that IJ book coming out?)
