Notification when later VCS (SVN) checkout version is available
I'm talking about SVN here. Is there support, or a plugin, which would notify me (popup / status icon) when a newer version of my current branch becomes available?

There is no such option. You can file feature request (http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/WI#newissue=yes ). See http://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/entries/23368682 if you are not familiar with YouTrack.
