Indexing takes a long time. . . . .

I open a new project/foder and admittedly there are alot of files in this folder but it seems that indexing not only takes a long time but it seems to consume almost all of the available memory making my machine almost unusable. Can I exit PHPStorm during this operation? What are the consequences? Is there something that I can set that would prevent this seemingly endless process before I load a similar project? Again, what are the consequences?

Thank you.

Indexing (especially initial one) might be a memory-consuming operation, but it doesn't prevent you from using your OS, so you can easily switch from PhpStorm to any other application and get back to PhpStorm when the indexing is finished (but you shouldn't exit/close PhpStorm completely - in this case indexing will stop).

There is nothing you can set to prevent PhpStorm from indexing new project - this is normal workflow for the IDE to index all the files in your project. You can't cancel this process, otherwise you would lack proper code completion and many other features.

If indexing of your project is too slow or you experience any other performance problems, feel free javascript:; to us.

Side note:
Latest EAP build has improved indexing performance -- you can try it and compare with what you have with your current version.
