Temporary freeze happens often in 3.0.5

I have a problem where IntelliJ locks up on me. It just stops for anywhere from 15 seconds to well over 3 minutes. I've turned off synchronization as well as the local VCS. Examining the log (including tailing it and watching it as one of these lock-ups strikes) shows nothing consistently happening at the same time.

System-wise, there are no CPU cycles being burned when this happens. While my current development system doesn't have a lot of memory (256 MB), I'm able to access other applications freely during these freeze ups, indicating that it's not because of swapping (which does happen, but affects all apps to a greater or lesser extent). I've also seen this on other systems with 512MB of RAM, so it doesn't seem to have anything to do with that.

The timing of these freezes is also inconsistent. I've had it happen while editing, while debugging in Tomcat, while opening files, etc.

Any ideas on what may be causing this? I've seen it on three different systems, so someone else MUST have observed it. I couldn't find any posts on it though. I may not be looking for the right things though.

This is version 3.0.5, build 706, running on Windows 2000. I've changed machines a few times, but that's been the consistent elements of the platform.

It occurred to me that I should elaborate on what I mean by "freezing." Basically the IDE goes completely dead. Whatever I'm doing stops. I can't change windows, I can't bring up menus, I can't step, I can't do anything. The window doesn't paint so, if I move another window back and forth across the IDE's window, it gets wiped out and just becomes grey. If I have a browser request in process, the browser just sits there spinning, waiting for the request to be fulfilled. This includes when the freeze happens during normal execution, not just while waiting at a breakpoint.

Eventually everything starts back up, the screen is repainted, I'm able to type, and so on. But it can really break my train of thought, since it can be fairly lengthy. It's really annoying when I'm just typing along and then it stops and I lose the thread I was working on.

Yes, I've experienced this on the following two machines:
Windows 2000
2 x 1GHz CPUs
2GB RAM

Windows 2003 Server
4 x 1.4 GHz CPUs
8GB RAM

No idea what it is though, the VM garbage collector perhaps ?

There are a couple of situations in which Idea can lock up, mostly due
to JDK bugs. The best thing to do is get a thread dump (Ctrl-Break in
the DOS console window) and send it to JetBrains to see if it's a known
issue and if they can recommend anything.
