IDEA versus WSAD

I currently work in a software development team for a rather large
corporation (not mentioning any names but begins with 'I', ends with 'M' and
has a 'B' in the middle). I have been attempting to convince colleagues,
management, etc. of the benefits of using Intellij IDEA. I have been doing
this by arguing that IDEA either matches or beats IBM WSAD in terms of
functionality, performance, (or whatever arguments I come up against).

A recent argument was that WSAD can produce a DTD from an XML and can
produce a Java source file representing the structure of said XML file and
methods, etc. to read/write said XML file. I haven't witnessed this
functionality, but I agree that it would be extremely useful.

My question is whether IDEA has a similar functionality so that I can match
this argument ?

Well the dtd creation is not a problem as it is in the eap version which
we all hope will be out before the end of this year.
Just open the xml file and tools -> generate dtd.

I dont now if there is any plugin to generate a java class to read xml
files.

Good luck in convincing :)

IMO this is a good idea for plugin. In fact, there is no end of options
for such java class. What should it do with incorrect xmls: Assertion? Null
values? Exception? Which one?
Should it read rows of same xml tags into arrays? Lists? Generic lists?
Other kinds of collections? I do not dare to mention naming conventions...

I am afraid WSAD gives pretty limited control over all that ;)

BTW, some people also say that this can be accomplished by XSLT (apparently
you need to use XMLSchemas and not DTDs for that - but I may be wrong here).

Friendly,
Dmitry

How it (WSAD) interpret? Sound like somethink not respectable ;)

I have a similar situation at my office... we're a huge IBM shop... AIX, DB2, WebSphere... still using WSAD4.0 by mandate.

One of the major issues I've run into that I haven't had time to investigate with IDEA is websphere integration... deploying, debugging, etc all from in the IDE... WSAD 4.0 redeploys for you every time you save something... which is either a blessing or a curse... I choose curse....

anyway... I'm really pushing for IDEA, but, as we all know... things move slowly in a large IT shop...

good luck!
