How to enable Zen Coding in PHP Smarty templates

Zen coding works great in html file however I cannot get it to work in Smarty templates (*.tpl).
I tried to edit a few live templates

Live Template > Zen HTML > "a"

I selected "Applicable in: " "Other".

No luck.
