Private Maven Repository on Jenkins server

We are working on projects using Maven which have some Maven dependencies from our own Jenkins server.  The problem is we don't want to make all of these dependencies public, so is it possible to authenticate (using a username and password) with the Jenkins server to access the artefacts in the Maven repositories.

I'm using Windows with IntelliJ IDEA 15 Community Edition, I tried adding a settings.xml file to my .m2 folder in my user folder with the username and password for the Jenkins server although this didn't help.  I also tried making the repositories public and used Nginx with HTTP 401 Basic Auth, although this didn't seem to work either.

Any help with this would be great
