Can't show diff for unknown file type

I am sharing the project wtih eclipse uses so we are using the .eml format.
I just tried to diff a change to the eml and got the message "Can't show diff for unknown file type. Associate"
If I press F4, the file opens as text in the editor so IDEA knows it is text. It also knows it is text because it is a supported format that IDEA writes to.
I opened an issue about this 6 years ago but it has since been closed.

Why is IDEA still not trying to diff unknown types as text?

Just tested in 2016.2 (162.1121) and Diff works fine for me with .eml, though no association in File types.
What IDEA version do you use?
How exactly do you invoke Diff, from which menu?
