Pycharm causes fan to run too much

Whenever I run Pycharm the fan on my Mac runs real loudly. This even happens when I shut my computer down for 8 hours. Pycharm is the only application that causes my fan to run. Even when I run Netflix or watch a TV show, the fan on my computer does not run. The fan also runs even when I only have two applications open: Excel and Pycharm. There has got to be something that I am doing wrong.

What's the hardware of your Mac?
It's not a problem with hardware. I'm looking at the activity monitor and pycharm is taking up between 100 to 300% of the CPU. Is this normal? I need to get that number down.
Again, what's your hardware?
I have a similar issue. Particularly during debugging, PyCharm causes high CPU - sucks. I am on a rMBP
I have the same issue, pycharm 2016.1, on a Core i7-4510U with 8gb of ram, only app that randomly eats one to two cores and brings the fans up if pycharm :/ so annoying...
yeah sigh, this is a daily battle for me. JetBrains seems unwilling to do something about it. My prime reason not to extent my license anymore and look for something else.
problem is, there is nothing like it. i just hit the end of my license and am also considering moving away from it, that or remove the fans from the computer :D:D:D
I worked with Spyder for a while and generally like the environment but getting libraries updated through/with it can be a nightmare. If you work with Django and larger projects, PyCharm seems to be the only thing out there - Spyder is more like a matlab clone. But I don't like the feeling of paying for something that isn't too well supported. I did contact the Jetbrain staff with this and other issues and found them to be dismissive rather than supportive. Perhaps my issues were indeed small and insignificant....
Indeed, what a disappointment. I just installed Pycharm 2016.2.3 professional. I was planning to get a subscription after getting some positive comments from colleagues; but now I am a bit suspicious. I've been using Eclipse PyDev and Spyder, both configured for Anaconda, and I've never encountered this problem before, nor even while debugging nor assembling large modules .
My story is as follows:
1. Fan speed increased exponentially with pycharm configured with the Anaconda python interpreter and all of its packages. (honestly, for a moment it appeared as if my mac was about to explode!)
2. No fan problem with pycharm using the default (and cheap) OS python installation.
Wonder if this has to do with the heavy weight pressed by external interpreters or distributions.. no clue. However, I strongly agree that this is a serious bug that must be addressed by Jetbrains or at least commented upon on this blog,... you know being a commercial product....
Hardware: Macbook pro mid 2015 edition. Running macOS 10.12.1 Darwin 16.1.0. on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (Crystalwell) 16GB of Onboard 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM. Intel Iris pro graphics.
The CE edition doesn't seem to have this problem. So seems to me JetBrain can figure this one out doing a contrast/compare between their own softwares. But, they don't seem to care - I guess a MBpro isn't professional enough (?)
I have to report that the problem went away unexpectedly. All I did was to reload my Anaconda modules and restart the operating system. Now PyCharm is running like a charm! :) I already started likening it a lot. Kudos to JetBrains.
I'm running CE Pycharm 2016.2.3 on a mid 2015 MacBook Pro, 2.8 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, running El Capitan (10.11.6) with Anaconda Python. Running PyCharm jacks up my fan and makes my computer run hot. This has been going on for a couple of months (since I put PyCharm on my Mac). Restarting the Mac doesn't make this change.
I also meet similar issue. I am running the pycharm professional 2018.2.2 on macbook pro 2018. When I restart the mbp and then open the pycharm, the fan will run crazy. Is there any solution for this?

wow... been 2.5 years since the original post and this still isnt fixed? really glad I am not paying for this anymore....
Hi Fernando, the problem probably has a different cause. It can be a custom plugin, a project-specific configuration (e.g. unexcluded folder with a lot of data) and so on. It is better to report the performance issues directly to the issue tracker or to pycharm-support@jetbrains.com with logs.
Hi, I have figured out the issue. Just like @Pavel Karateev said, I opened a folder with a lot of data without excluding them. After I excluded that folder, the fan became normal. Thank you for all of your reply. 😊
