Should current IntelliJ IDEA user use Android Studio for Android development?

Answered says

If I’m already a user of IntelliJ IDEA, do I need to switch to Android Studio for Android development?

No. Android Studio is focused specifically on Android development and provides streamlined environment and project setup, but otherwise all of its features are available in IntelliJ IDEA.

Is this answer still valid for the current versions of IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio?

In general is there an updated version of, or what aspects of it now needs update?

It's up to you. If you develop only for Android and don't need any IDEA specific features, AS would provide a more streamlined experience and a cleaner interface (not cluttered with the options for other languages and frameworks). Otherwise, Android related functionality should be almost the same as the changes from Android Studio are merged into IntelliJ IDEA and IntelliJ IDEA Platform changes are merged into Android Studio.

The last sentence is reassuring. Just to be sure, since Android Studio is free and IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate is not, are all the changes to the latter always completely mergeable and in fact merged?

IntelliJ IDEA platform is free and open source, Android Studio merges the changes from the platform and doesn't include Ultimate only features.
